Doing Your Own Search

Search by Characteristics
On the SEARCH page, you can search for plants by just one characteristic (e.g., flower color) or by many different characteristics. You can choose to display the results by common or botanical name.

Examples

• You can look for all plants in the CD that “grow in chaparral and have red flowers in June”, or for “shrubs that can resprout after fires”, “annuals that grow in oak woodland”, or for “plants with compound leaves and 4-petaled flowers”.
• If you are interested in selecting plants for your native plant garden, you can search for plants that “attract butterflies and tolerate clay soil”, or for plants that “grow under oaks”.

Search by Name
You can search on any part of the common or botanical name – with or without other search criteria.

For example, you can ask for plants that have “calif” in their names. The application will look for “calif” anywhere in the common or botanical names, as well as in the common or botanical family names. The resulting list will also include plants with “calif” in alternate common names, as well as former or future botanical names (if we knew about them).
