Birds and Butterflies

Within the Natural History section, we provide separate pages of information about the value of plants to birds and butterflies: Birds and Plants and Butterflies and Plants.

The information we provide applies to the plants in the wild, but may also be useful for gardeners who want to attract birds and butterflies to their garden.

In addition to the general information pages, we have included paragraphs on birds and butterflies in the plant descriptions.

For birds, we provide information primarily on plants that birds use as direct sources of food. For butterflies, we have information on those plants that are sources of nectar for adult butterflies, as well as those that are food plants for their larvae, the caterpilars.

If you want to find plants that attract hummingbirds or provide food to other birds, you can use the SEARCH function. There, you can also find plants that provide food for butterfly larvae and plants that are especially good for providing nectar to adults.
